Le groupe soul pop britannique Simply Red est créé en 1984 avec à sa tête le chanteur soul rouquin Mick Hucknall, dit "Red". Simply Red touche aussi bien la soul que le jazz, la dance ou le reggae, des sons qui trouvent plus aisément le succès en Europe qu'aux Etats-Unis. En 1989, "A New Flame" devient disque d'or, grâce notamment à "If You Don't Know Me By Now". "Stars", sorti en 1991, réalise les meilleures ventes de l'année et termine disque d'or grâce aux hits "Stars" et "For Your Babies". Une page se tourne pour Simply Red. Mick Hucknall a révélé à la presse britannique que le groupe se séparait après 25 ans d'existence. Cette dissolution surviendra au lendemain de leur grande tournée prévue pour 2009.
